Who's lying, Bill Mckibben or The Guardian?

Following the recent acceleration in climate chaos The Rolling Stone has finally woken up to the horror story upon us. They have run a story by Bill McKibben, the man behind the number fetishist campaign group 350.org. In the article Mr McKibben recognises the two degree dangerous limit is too much.

'many scientists have come to think that two degrees is far too lenient a target. "Any number much above one degree involves a gamble," writes Kerry Emanuel of MIT, a leading authority on hurricanes, "and the odds become less and less favorable as the temperature goes up." Thomas Lovejoy, once the World Bank's chief biodiversity adviser, puts it like this: "If we're seeing what we're seeing today at 0.8 degrees Celsius, two degrees is simply too much."

Mmm, true as far as it goes, though in fact the whole idea of a single dangerous limit is a lie. But that is too much for the gatekeepers, so let us keep to the playing field defined by the loudest voices.

So, how do we explain this from The Guardian, written only 3 years ago and repeated in the editorials of 56 European countries in the lead up to Copenhagen

‘The science is complex but the facts are clear. The world needs to take steps to limit temperature rises to 2C’ (The Guardian, December 6th, 2009).

This is from a well respected news outlet seen as the leading light of progressive thought. But it is perpetrating a lie which will screw us all.
